October's feasts keep on rolling with the Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2nd.
Before going to sleep each night, I was taught to pray, "Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here, ever this night (or day) be at my side, to light and to guard, to rule and to guide. Amen!"
But who are these, Guardians dear? Click this post to find out.
First, of all we have to discuss what are angels? The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states that angels are "purely spiritual creatures", that is, they don't have a body; they are non-corporeal beings (CCC 330). They "have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness" (CCC 330). Since they have a will, that means they--like us humans--have the ability to choose to love and follow God. Satan (i.e. Lucifer or "Light Bearer") and his demons are angels. But out of pride, they chose to disobey God, and so they "fell", or rather, St. Michael came and opened a can of Whoop-Your-Feathered-Non-Corporeal-Butt. St. Mike looked Lucifer in the eye and said, "Who is like God? You sho 'aint! Son." [*** NOTE: perhaps, I'll write more about the Fall later. ***]
The word "angel" comes from the Hebrew word of messenger. For as St. Augustine said: "'Angel' is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is 'spirit'; if you seek the name of their office, it is 'angel': from what they are, 'spirit,' from what they do, 'angel'. With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they 'always behold the face of the Father who is in heaven' they are the 'mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word.'" (CCC 329).
Now, guardian angels have a particular function. It is "in the mind of the Church" that an individual angel is "assigned" to watch over us and be our helper through life...especially to guide us to Christ on the path of righteousness. "From infancy to death human life is surrounded by [the angels'] watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God" (CCC 336).
St. Pio of Pietrelcina had man encounters with his guardian angel. You can also read more here.
